Edwin Ndlovu. Big guy in the small place

Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton City
Former president Nelson Mandela has been made one of the worlds iconic man, with status of himself placed around the world such as the one in Sandton. The statue is situated at the entrance of the Nelson Mandela Square, with a little space saved on each side for the movement of people in and out the place,  acts as both a landmark and node according to Kevin Lynch. The Square acts as a node because people gather around  to chat, meet for coffee and take pictures of the them and the statue. It also acts as a landmark because it stands out amoungst the other places, it is external, and pepole can easily recongnise the area by just observing the picture.

  1. Nompumelelo Majola: I think they could have put the statue in a better place because, as Edwin pointed out, there isn't much space for people to move around the statue. I don't think it should have been placed at an entrance.

  2. Lindiwe Gugushe: I think it regulates the traffic flow when its in the middle because a lot of people cannot enter at the place at the same time, preventing chaos!
