ELSIE KHAUNDE KATALIHWA BUSINGE

                                              LOCALITY MAP SHOWING THE AREA
what makes democratic streets?
The use and the diversity of a street as Mark Francis talks about is different activities that are carried out on the street and the diversity of the people living in the place. this picture above shows the different use in terms of parking and cars driving on the street, the pedestrians on the road because of the different businesses going on, although not all parts of the streets of the street are being used by the pedestrians because the more shops and businesses on one side than the other.
The traffic management of the street that Mark Francis also talks about is from the point view of the children playing on the street but in the modern society especially with the high crime rate and the human carelessness i think the traffic lights are not for that kind of safety but the safety of other people, that peple can be able to cross the road and feel run through it because a car is coming at a high speed and to reduce the car accidents. these also add to attachmet of the place because one can now feel safe on the street.
The comfort of the street is not what is found on the Stiemens, De Kofte and Beer street, looking at it from Mark Francis' view because these streets do not have his examples of comfort like a seating area but poeple feel comfort on the street otherwise they woulnt be there because this isa place of their enjoyment.

  1. SAMUKELISIWE MAKWAKWA,THOSE GUYS THERE AT HARRISON STREET ARE INTIMIDATING WHEN YOU HAVE TO WALK PAST THAT STREET ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE A FEMALE. I SAY THIS BECAUSE MY FIRST TIME BEING THERE WAS PRETTY MUCH NOT COMFORTABLE AS YOU SAY BECAUSE OF THE HARASSMENT THAT ONE SUFFERS FROM THERE MAN DOMINATING THIS AREA.

  2. Maryam-You said that this street is comfortable, but as Samukelisiwe said it is hard to feel comfortable as a female.Jacobs says a democratic street is where social gathering of different races, ages and GENDERS come together. Walking on a crowded street, especially in Johannesburg, you dont feel safe because, for example, theft can occur so much easier.I have been robed on a street just as crowded not so far from the one you have labeled as being democratic. You need to stay aware on most streets in Johannesburg, with this being said would you stil classify this street as a democratic street? if yes, why?

  3. zintathu: i would like to agree with maryam and samkelisiwe in this case. you say that the street is comfortable or people would not be walking on it, i would like to disagree on that because people dont walk in certain streets because they like it, but they walk because they have to and some times it is because they dont have a shorter way. you also say that people enjoy in this street but i feel like you are not taking to consideration other people ( the majority). if u had interviewed some people to get different opinions, you would then make a strong argument based on the statistics but know i think you are just generalising hence your argument is inadequate.

  4. zintathu: i will agree with maryam and samke on this one because i feel that you are generelising and i believe that if you had conducted an interview with a certain amount of people then you would be able to base your argument on statistics hence i feel taht your argument is inadequate. you say that people walk in this street and therefore they are comfortable and enjoy but i believe that people do not walk on some streets because they are comfortable, they walk because they have no other route or shoter way that they can use.
